Case Study: 12 year old boy gets surgery for pancreas after getting hit with a bicycle handle

Background

Surgery of pancreas is always demanding and need high level of surgical expertise.

There are many challanges while operating on Pancreas:

  • Pancreas itself is very soft and delicate organ so meticulous handling Is required.
  • Pancreas is very closely associated with key blood vessels of intestines (portal vein & splenic vein); infact they have very close relationships as they support blood supply to pancreas and spleen.

While doing surgery, the  blood vessels of spleen may be inadvertently injured and that may warrant the removal of spleen. Spleen is one of the key organ to help and maintain immunity of our body.

Case

A 12 yr old boy got hit by the handle of his bicycle in the tummy. Initially it did not seem serious but gradually the pain in his stomach became severe. After this he was hospitalised.

Upon diagnosis by CT scan of abdomen it was found that there is complete transection of pancreas resulting in a lot of blood leakage in tummy.

He was seen and assessed by Dr. Avinash Tanksuper-specialist (MCh) Laparoscopic Gastro-intestinal Surgeon, and advised for emergency surgery.

Subsequently, after preparation, surgery was conducted on Sunday (5 Dec '21).

His condition warranted removal of damaged pancreas which was approximately 65%.

While the surgery was complicated, in this particular case, all near-by blood vessels were taken care of and the spleen was also safe gaurded.

Most of the surgery was done by Key hole Laparoscopic technique.

Conclusion

The surgery was a success and the boy is making smooth recovery and went home within a week of surgery.
